The most common applications are for running tools and smaller modules designed for a landing velocity up to 1.8 m/s, and larger modules weighing up to 600 tons or more, designed for landing velocity of typically 0.5 m/s. The cylinders are designed to take min. 15-20% skew loads at full stroke. Skew loads appear when the landing structure is tilting compared to the base structure, or is pushed sideways by the guiding system. The standard stroke is 300 mm.
Damping is achieved by throttling water. The cylinder is filling up automatically with sea water when submerged and need not be connected to any external system, hydraulics or accumulators. The system can be used at any depth without any pre-adjustment.
Through the special throttle pattern developed, the breaking force is kept relatively constant over the stroke, and large dynamic peaks are avoided.
The cylinder has full response to heave motions achieved by the unique and patented piston design allowing for a high flow with low resistance from the underside of the piston to the upper side when the piston is moving down, and full sealing to pressure when moving up.
